Today I want to introduce the 4 Ps of marketing. The 4 Ps is a type of marketing mix designed to help you create and identify all of the elements needed to craft the perfect marketing strategy.

The 4 Ps of marketing serves as a great starting point for the planning of a new product or to evaluate and sell an existing product or service.  

Let’s break the 4 Ps down and figure out how to make them work for you!


What Are The Four P's of Marketing?

Your product is either a tangible good or an intangible service that meets and fulfills a customer’s specific need or demand in the marketplace. It is critically important that you understand the exact problem your product is attempting to solve.

All of the key benefits offered by your product and its features should be crystal clear and easily presentable to your target audience in a way that communicates exactly why they need your product or service and can’t live without it. 

2 – PRICE 

What Are The Four P's of Marketing?

Price, is the amount you wish to exchange your product or service with your target customer. How a product is priced relative to the value the product provides will directly affect how it sells. If a product is priced higher or lower than its perceived value, then it will either not sell or underperform competitors in the same market.

For example, selling water to a thirsty crowd in the desert, you could practically charge someone’s firstborn for a bottle or two of water.

However, if you were to try and sell bottles of water to someone in a cold grocery store at a price that is too high relative to the water they could buy in house, you will struggle to get the sale!  This is why it is very important to understand how a customer perceives what you are selling. Positive customer value means that you can charge a price higher than its objective monetary value.

How you communicate your product offering and its attached value falls under promotion. You want to be able to communicate your product offerings value and how it is different from your competitors. Solving the promotion portion of the marketing mix helps you identify how you will reach your target market. 

This could be:

  • Internet
  • Direct Mail
  • Or PR (Press Release)
  • Facebook Ad
  • Google Ad
  • Bing Ad
  • Social Media Post
  • Solo Ad
  • Traffic Exchange
  • E-Mail Campaign

You will also want to identify the best times to promote your product offering. When will your target audience be looking for your product or service to feel their needs? Is your product seasonal? Are there any external factors that could affect the availability or usability of your product or service?

These are vital questions that you must answer before beginning your promotion.

Lastly, you must determine the placing of your product/service. This is the process that you will use to bring the product or service to your intended market. 

Where does your audience usually purchase your product or service? Correct placement focuses on where your product is located, where your target market is actively searching for your product, and how to connect the two. 

If they are looking for your product in stores, what type of stores? 

If they are looking for your products online, which websites or search engines?

If they are looking for your product in magazines or catalogs, which ones?

Once you have these questions answered, it is up to you to determine how to create the distribution pipeline so that your product reached your audience in the place they are most likely to purchase from you. 

If you are hair care products placing your product promotion inside of a men’s sports shop may not be the most cost-effective method of reaching them. Unless you sell hair care solutions specifically for men of course. 


The 4 Ps of marketing is a single tool that had been developed over the years to help you analyze and plan for a new product offering or to review the marketing of a current product.

Used correctly, these questions will help you paint a clear picture of how you should develop, test, and promote or product giving you an edge when it comes to market penetration.

Believe it or not, many businesses and organizations have no answer to this question. They basically have a social media presence because they know it’s something they should be doing in this day and age. Rarely do they stop and think about what they’re hoping to achieve on social media. Once you have a purpose, however, you automatically see a direction for how and what you should post.

You’ve probably heard this before, but goals for any aspect of your business, including social media, should be S.M.A.R.T.

This stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. For the purposes of this post, I’m going to focus on the first one.

Considerations for posting social media with purpose

Every time we post on social media, we need to make sure that each post has a specific purpose. We should not post on a whim. We need to make sure that there is a desired outcome with every post. We should have some idea what each post should accomplish.

Posting with purpose requires that you have an overall goal for your social media.

How do you know if you have an overall goal of your social media?

When you sit down at your computer, or grab your smart phone, do you know what the first thing you need to do is?

If you don’t have a goal for your social media, you will waste time trying to figure out what to do next.

When you have a goal for your social media, and you are posting the purpose, you will be anticipating the type of results you should be getting from your posts. It’s like this, if I do this, then this should happen. If I post a link, then people should click on that link. This is not wishful thinking. You have done all the initial set up to give your post the best chance of achieving its desired outcome.

For example, if your purpose is to have the post shared, is the post share worthy? One of the things that I always ask myself is this, “Would I share this myself?” Is it or anything about the post that would cause people to share that post? Maybe we include a cool photo, along with the text, that people pretty want to share with others on social media.

Think before you press the Publish button

Too often, many people post just to fill a slide in their schedule or just have something there on social media. They do not post with purpose, and therefore, don’t really anticipate a desired outcome. They are rolling the dice on to speak and hoping for good results. They tell themselves that “May be this time the post will go viral” and crossing fingers.

Using social media for business is not about luck. I love this expression, “The harder I work, the luckier I get!” Success on social media comes when proper preparation meets hard work and consistency. Social media is going to take some time and it will require a lot of thought. The more thought you put in your social media, the greater the chances of you seeing some really good results.

What should we do with our social media today?

We should plan to come up with an overall goal for our social media. When we begin the post on our social media, we should already know what we’re going to do next. We should know what we want to achieve, and that is what comes out of posting with purpose.

Things we can do:

  • Think about what results we want to get from each post type, and set our posts to achieve those outcomes.
  • Create a posting calendar so that we can plan each day what we want to post about.
  • Keep up to date with what is happening in our community so we can make our posts responsive to what is going on in our community.

How to Set Specific Goals

Now that you know how specific social media goals should look, it’s time to get down to business.

As with anything else, your business’s mission and vision should be at the center of everything you do. Whenever you hope to change or improve anything about your business, ask yourself whether or not what you’re doing comes back to your mission.

If your social media schedule is random and haphazard, it does nothing to advance your goals.

In fact, you may actually hurt yourself that way. Have you ever gone to a Facebook page that was last updated long ago? I know I have.

Consequently, I had a harder time taking that business or organization seriously.

At its most basic level, email marketing is the use of email to promote your business. It is used to cultivate relationships with potential customers, keep current customers informed and updated on your brand, offer coupons to encourage customer loyalty, and more!

According to a new survey from the Content Marketing Institute, 83% of B2B marketers are still using email marketing via eNewsletters to reach their target audience. Tried and true methods never fail, right?
Maybe not. Of that 83%, only 58% are finding these methods to be effective. And while that’s still a decent percentage, there’s a lot of room for improvement.
Every digital marketer needs the right skills and tools to be successful. So, what can make email marketing more effective?
Email marketing only works if you know how to work it.
Here are some ways to make it work for you:
  • Make it personal. 

Don’t be afraid to get personal with your customers. Personalization increases response rates and boosts engagement. Use names in email messages to grab attention, but don’t use full names–that can come off as creepy and even make customers feel uncomfortable. Make sure the customer information you have on file is accurate. Misspelling names or using incorrect titles can damage your reputation instead of helping it.

  • Use subject lines, headlines, and subheads to your advantage. 

It can be tempting to quickly write subject lines, headlines, and subheads, but it’s worth your time to put some thought into crafting these smaller, but valuable, facets of customer communication. Be simple and straightforward, but clever in your subject line and headline. The recipient should be able to understand the purpose of your message with just a 3- to 5-second scan. Make sure your subheads support your headline and offer further information and instruction without distracting from the body of your copy.

  • Write targeted, brief and enticing body copy. 

People never want to read rambling copy–and people especially don’t want to read rambling copy in an email. Open with text that will hook your audience, like a rhetorical question or compelling offer. Avoid yes or no questions, as these can deter customers based on their answers. Introduce the most compelling benefits of your offer, summarize important details and focus your energy on one clear call to action. Make your copy easy to scan by using short sentences, simple language, and bulleted lists.

  • Don’t overlook the little things. 

In an email, a bit of extra effort on your end goes a long way for the readers, especially for mobile. You can boost user experience by pre-filling forms, limiting the number of fields on a form, pulling in user data through progressive profiling and sizing the fields to match the length of the information to be entered. All of these steps lead to better response and engagement rates.

  • Know when to send and when not to send. 

The ideal send frequency can vary depending on audience expectations, product, service or campaign type. Generally speaking, you should send emails at least once a month. But don’t send an email just for the sake of sending an email–communicate with your audience when you really have something good to offer. Make sure the content is useful and the topic is relevant. Don’t send too often and don’t be too aggressive. That’s a major turnoff.

  • Call users to action. 

The call to action is everything. Use persuasive words and incorporate the “What? Why? How?” method. Tell users what they need to do, why they should do it and how to do it. Tailor the CTA to your audience and provide multiple links throughout the email to make it easy for users to take action. Use CTA buttons, but avoid including CTA links within any images.

  • Avoid common email marketing blunders. 

Avoiding common mistakes can give your email and your entire campaign the finishing touches needed to be a success. Don’t use all caps, don’t mention opt-in preferences in your email body copy, and don’t choose font colors and sizes that are too hard to read or too large to display on mobile. Use clean and light HTML coding, include basic company information like name and address, include an unsubscribe link in the footer and use common fonts to ensure it will be readable on whatever device your customers are using.

After you accomplish ALL of this, finally, There are only two components to make email marketing really work:
  1. precise segmentation
  2. personalization based on behavior.

I say it again, personalization is not about adding your recipient’s name to an email. It’s about understanding their behavior within your product or website and scheduling your emails based on it.
